at home im behind a router using dsl
periodically we cant get any name resolution (isp provided 2 dns ip's)
so ill do a repair (all settings remain same)
and boom it works same problem is occuring on my wifes osx box and my linux boxes
have to reinitiealize the network and since no settings are changing the only thing i can think of is we are loosing dns connection with the server adn reestablishing it with the repair/ifconfig etc... since before i do it nslookup fails and after it works
ive tried switching dns order between the two they provided and it seems to make no differnece
the only thing i can think of is it might be the hub on my side
it goes
router to switch to hub
but the boxes directly pluged into the linsys router suffer same prob any one know how i can show my isp its them and not me how would i go about creating a log file to send them
i can use either windows linux or osx wichever is easier for you to show me what kinda shell i need to whip upthanks

You said "Linksys router" but failed to say which one or what version of code it runs.
Have you considered the possibility that the DNS problem is the router?
I have a Linksys BEFSR41 and after v1.45.6 (and now v1.45.7) and from time to time DNS resolution quits. I can ping by IP address, even the DNS routers, run WINIPCFG. But no DNS resolution. Can reboot system. Power cycle the modem. If I give up and let it set for 20 to 30 minutes, it clears up and works.
However, if I drop power on both the Linksys modem and Linksys router, bring them up. Wait ten minutes for the router to get its act together it works.
If you do not have specific DNS IP addresses set in the Network properties, then DNS requests go to the router and it does the DNS request. I am convinced it is a Linksys router firmware problem, but no idea how to reproduce the problem.

Hi
I recently had a similar problem with my linksys 54g broadband router, I could not get any name resolution for about two hours, and nothing was working to get it back!!
I restarted everything, modem, router, switch, server and all clients and rebooted all at the right intervals and still nothing!!I got round it by finding another two DNS servers and specifying there ips in the DHCP setup on my router!! I also heard that if you specify a third dns server as your own ip address, that helps to? Im not too sure about that though!!
Since then everything has worked fine, to be honest it works quicker now than it did before!!
Take care
Rich
