Hi,

I'm having an issue with google not being reocgnised via the DNS. I can access it using the subnet mask but I can't access things google related like gmail. All other sites work just fine.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

"I can access it using the subnet mask"

Sorry but that doesn't make any sense.

So lets backup and you tell us why you think this is a dns error and what error you get when you try to go to google.

You have reviewed any software firewalls on your pc for google entries?

Example of Oxymoron:

Person who is pro life and anti sex education.
Education is key to prevention. Prevent conception you prevent abortion.

Abstinence training clearly isn't working.

Try nslookup to the web sites in question.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Thank you for the responses.

I may have used the wrong terminology in my first message, but if I use Yahoo to look up Google and then click on the link to Google, the error message says this page cannot be found. When I pinged for the subnet for Google and use this, the page loads without a problem.

This only exists for Google related pages.

If I go straight to Google the error mesage comes up straight away, but when it use the IP for Google, the page loads up fine. That's why I think there is a DNS issue.

Thanks.

That is a good reason to think it is a dns issue.

Go to a cmd prompt and type ipconfig /all and post the results here.

Test to configure following free DNS servers from OpenDNS on your computer, and test again.

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Hope it helps..

Thanks. I will try that later, but the issue seems to be deeper than that. I am having MS office documents blocked as well. I can't open them. I ran a further virus check and nothing was found.

What causes a DNS problem?

Thanks for all your help.

A ipconfig /all would have shown us what dns server you are pointed to. Without that info troubleshooting is dead in the water.

DNS has nothing to do with accessing your local word docs.

A number of issues can lead to a "problem with dns".

By the sounds of it your problem is local and has nothing to do with external internet based dns.

Example of Oxymoron:

Person who is pro life and anti sex education.
Education is key to prevention. Prevent conception you prevent abortion.

Abstinence training clearly isn't working.

Thanks for the support. The results were:

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Servers: 192.168.0.1

I tried to alt prtscr and then paste here, but the form wouldn't let me.

Thanks.

Logon to your router.
Go to the wan interface
Write down the ISP provided DNS servers
Go into the DHCP page of the router
Put these dns servers in dhcp so when you get a ip address it contains these dns servers.

Using your gateway as dns is like shoving a message thru a peep hole and hoping to get an answer back. Whereas doing as I suggest above means you hand the message to a known dns server and it will give you the answer back.

You need images on in your computing.net profile I believe to post pictures/screen captures. I do know you have to have images on to see them here.

Have you checked your hosts file and any spyware program you are running for a google entry? Number of times a box/question gets checked/answered wrong and this software then blocks/restricts access.

Virus's are different then spyware FYI

Your word docs local? Or on the local lan somewhere?

Make sure to run chkdsk /r to check for file system corruption.

Example of Oxymoron:

Person who is pro life and anti sex education.
Education is key to prevention. Prevent conception you prevent abortion.

Abstinence training clearly isn't working.

Wow! Thanks for that, but I'm going to have to ask you to break it down further.

How do I logon to my router?

I use AVG which has spyware but when I checked the details, they were fairly generic stating what spyware is and the importance of keeping it up to date.
