Hey peeps, a friend of mine all of a sudden had a problem with her internet. She said it was working then all of a sudden IE kept giving those errors that it can find the page. I noticed at the bottom that it said, Cant find server or Dns error. I went through the networking troubleshooter. It pinged everything fine, i then released and renewed the ip, that didnt help either. I checked if there were any hardware conflicts and none. Restart a few times, nothing. Not sure what else to do. This is the third computer on a cable line. The other two work and can be seen by the nonworking computer. Its just that internet sites cannot be viewed. Please advise. Thank you.

Do you have a software firewall installed on that computer. If so, disable it and check the net again. If you can get on the net then turn it back on and configure it (firewall) to let your Internet access, access the Internet.

"This is the third computer on a cable line. The other two work and can be seen by the nonworking computer."

I'm guessing they have some type of router, correct? If so make sure your getting an IP address from the router. Go to a command prompt and type in ipconfig
Make sure your getting an IP address, subnet, and gateway. Your gateway will be the IP address of the router.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Ya theres an IP and no there's no firewall. I did the scan network or something in the network troubleshooter in xp. That does all the pinging and it all came back successful. Yes they have a router. Any other checks i can do to determine the problem. My last option is to format and see if that works. Hope i dont have to. Please Help.

Formatting the HD isn't going to help. This is a networking problem.

If I was you I would get a little more background information from her by asking if she installed anything or changed anything right up before her computer stop being able to get on the Internet or this isn't the first time you put this computer on the net/LAN?

I know you did the network troubleshooter but you/we need to see what's going on.

Go to a command prompt and type in "route print" without the""

Then do a "ipconfig" and make sure that your getting the same Gateway IP. Is the Default Gateway the IP of the router, it should be.

The other computers on this router are fine correct?

Also try moving the cable to another port on the router. That port might be bad. If you can replace the cable.

Thanks again for responding.
Girl doesnt know much about computers so asking her anything might result in a brain hemorage. Anyways, i did try switching the ports so i know its not that. What i did do is i took the plug and put it into a laptop which had no problems connecting. I released and renewed ips on both but it only seems to work on the laptop. I think it may be stuck in the modem so i think im gonna power it down and see if that works.
There is also another pc on the lan which works fine. Thanks for the tips and tricks and advice.

Illectric's problem is identical to mine. It occurred the 11th of January. My workstation uses Windows98 and shares a hub in the room next door and is part of a multiple computer network using Novell. The other room's computer has the Internet and my computer is still sharing data with the entire network. Just before I lost my Internet connection, I had downloaded Ad-Aware and Window Washer. I ran them both and have been "Web-less" ever since. Window Washer's manufacturer says its program had nothing to do with the problem.

So far, I have run msinfo32's Internet repair tool, which told me that a component was missing and could not be repaired. I re-installed Internet Explorer. I have rebuilt the network properties driver. I have unplugged everything. I have plugged the cable into a different hub port. I am running out of ideas short of kicking the tower.

The school's computer guys have worked on my computer for 2 hours. They disappeared and said they don't know when it will be fixed because they don't know what is causing the problem. I waited 3 years for the Internet to be connected in the first place, so this problem scares me, as I do not want to wait another 3 years for this problem to be fixed. Help!

Something I would do. I don't know the error message your getting from the msinfo32 but go to this link and see if it helps you. http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/msinfo32.htm

Then I would check to see if your IPX/SPX protocol is installed are not. (If your Novell is using IPX/SPX) If you can still connect to other computers on the LAN then its not a router per-say problem it sounds like a Gateway (your routers ip address to get out to the world) problem. I don't know what protocols your using but something has been deleted, moved, or changed. I used Window Washer in the past and it crapped on my system as well. Not the same problem but other things.

Go to a DOS prompt and type in "winipconfig" without the "". Ask the tech guys if the gateway ip address is the right one.

One more thought. Go to a command prompt and type in "route print" without the""

When you do the "winipconfig" see if your gateway IP address is matching up with the routers/gateway IP address. It should be the same for you to be able to access the outside world. You didn't install a software firewall did you?

I had the same problem, I lost the internet after claering out some spyware. The fix for me was to run winsockfix.exe. I found it doing a search on dogpile. I was told through my board supplier that when the spyware is removed it sometimes corrupts the winsock registry, and this program will rebuild it.
Worth a shot!

SAME PROBLEM HERE!!! Happened around the same time. There are 3 users on my PC. We each log in under our own name. First, my boyfriend could view web pages, so he gave up and started logging in under my name, a week or so later that quit working so now we are both going in under my son's name! Don't know how long that will work. The error I'm getting is:
res://c:\windows\system32\shdod.c.dll\dnserror.htm Any ideas??

I just had the exact same problem, as Jpar. I use Windows 98 and downloaded ad-aware. After installing and running ad-aware, my connection to the internet was gone. So i went online and got winsockfix.exe with my laptop which is still internet capable. I got this at http://ntcanuck.com/Beta/useful_programs/
I ran it on my 98 machine and internet is working again

WOW, I had the same dns error problem on my Windows 98SE laptop using "Dial Up". I tried everything I knew and alot I didn't (got tips from others). 4 tech support guys from microsoft couldn't fix it either. I have many hours working through this problem. Then I found this site surfing on a old laptop using a 14.4 modem. I was hesitant to run the "winsockfix.exe" but I did. It worked GREAT. Here I am replying to you on the Laptop that was down. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

What I did was took e advice of the 2 replies. I went to,

http://ntcanuck.com/Beta/useful_programs/

Downloaded this excellent little tool on to a floppy. Copied to a folder on my laptop, then double clicked it. I chose to make a recovery disk just in case, then ran the fix. Rebooted and BAAAAM. I'm up and running. Hope this will help someone else. I also hope Microsoft tech people will learn this techniqe. Again I say Thank You.
