DNS (Domain Name System)

I have a question regarding the Domain Name System.

Sometimes, I visit sites by typing in the URL address and get a "website not found" message. However, when I enter in the sites' IP addresses, the site works fine.

Is there a name for this phenomenon? And what is the underlying cause of this? What are ways to fix this?

Please help. Thank you very much.

It would appear you are not pointed to a dns server that has those url names to resolve to ip.

what do you list for dns server ip?

I just pinged the site the find the IP and then entered in the IP.

I am looking more for the causes of this, and not so much the solution as the IP method is working ok.

Like specifically, why couldn't the dns server resolve the url names to ip?

One reason could be, that in some countries, the ISPs are adviced by their government, to block some sites.
An easy, but not realy effecive way is to simply do not resolve the names to their ip address.

Therefore it's alway a good idea, to use more than one DNS server. So use one from your ISP and another free DNS server.
