I need some help networking.
I have a windows2k Small buisness server OS.
A Cable modem.
8-port hub
4 workstations(XP pro)

I want to set up my server as a router and use the Active directory for workstations confugrurations VIA "Group Policies".

I've had 2 classes on WIN2K server and alot of networking experience so I'm familar with techiee terms but I'm getting confused tring to configure this many settings.

I know I need DHCP & DNS & AD installed on the server. Right? And I think I also need to use the Routing and Remote access to set up the server as a router. Right?

Q.1) What order should I install these(DNS, DHCP, AD, Routing&remote)?

Q.2) Should I connect everything through the hub or should I connect the cable modem to a separate NIC on the Server?

TO MANY VARIABLES HERE, I'M GETTING CONFUSED.

P.S.
I do want the workstations to have Dynamic Addresses and internet connectivity.

1. You have to install DNS either before or during the AD integration. DHCP should be installed/configured after the DC is up and running without errors. RRAS will already be installed, you just have to configure it for your purposes after DHCP.

2. I would connect the internet to the server if you don't have a highspeed internet router. I would highly recommend a router instead, they're cheap and easy to setup and you could daisy chain it to your hub to provide service to all your clients.

You don't want a cable connection directly into a hub as the hub doesn't provide firewall protection or NAT...ergo my suggestion about the router. With a router, you'ld have to firewall each PC...with a router with a built in firewall, all clients would be protected by the one device.

On the other hand, using the server with dual NIC's (one for internet, one for LAN) you could put a firewall on it, plug it into the hub and server internet to all clients via RRAS.

OKAY, I'll have to add a router later mine broke.

Right now I've got the Win2K server running AD, DHCP, and DNS with two NICs. One Nic is to Cable modem with the following Static Settings(I stole from detecting automaticlly and then just setting them manually)
--------------
Nic#1
IP 24.119.200.252
Sub 255.255.254.0
Gateway 24.119.200.1

DNS 24.116.0.159
24.116.0.202
The other NIC is connected to the HUB with a static IP settings of:
---------------
NIC #2
IP 10.0.0.1
sub 255.0.0.0
gateway empty
DNS 10.0.0.1
--------------
The Server is connecting to the internet and the workstations are logging into my domain. However, the workstations cannot connect to the internet.
What do I need to do to get them on the internet?

More Settings:
DHCP MMC has this as my server:
"24-119-200-252.cpe.cableone.net[24.119.200.252]"

I created a scope:
"Scope[10.0.0.0]MyScope"
Address pool: 10.0.0.100 - 10.0.0.200

Under "Scope Options:
003 Router Standard 10.0.0.1
006 DNS Servers Standard 10.0.0.1, 24.119.200.252
015 DNSDomainName Standard MYDOMAIN

You need to set up RRAS. It's been a while since I've done it myself but if you go into RRAS and enable your server a wizard comes up that will help guide you through the process. Also, you can read the info in the help files and there's more available on microsoft's web site.
