Hi,
Today while driving I saw I big "Antec 900 Gaming Case" cardboard box in someones trash. I figured I'd check it out because maybe their old computer would be in it. To my surprise, there was a BUNCH of computer parts. One of them was a D-Link DI-624 Irplus Xtreme G Wireless Router! My Router is pretty much dead so I figured if this one works I'd save some loot. The was no power cord with it though. It says on the back 5V 2.5A. I figured I'd plug in my bad hawking router power into it which is 12V, same polarity. I onlt had it plugged in for about 5 secs just to see if the lights would light - they did. I smelled an electronic smell and unplugged it. My question is, do you think I burnt it up by plugging in the higher voltage power? Or does the router only use what it needs and maybe the thing was burnt up already and that's why it was in the trash?? If you guys think my 12v adapter is ok - I'll plug it back in and hook up my ethernets to it and try it out, otherwise, I'll check my stash in the basement and see if I have anything else closer in volts. Something is telling me that devices only use however many amps they require, even if the supply is higher, but i dunno if volts work the same way....lemme know....
thanks!!

Your thinking is right. The device will only use whatever amps it needs. Volts, that's another story.
Did you damage something? Can't tell. If you smell something burning though it is not a good sign. Some routers have a voltage regulator internally. That is a possibility.
If you have the right voltage adaptor that meets at least the minimum amp requirements, I'd try it again. What's there to lose?
Dan

Good news! I found the adapter in the box! I gotta test it though. Most of the other stuff I'm going to put on ebay to see what happens.
