I really need assistance with getting my router to share the internet between two computers. Heck, I think it may not even be the router.
Heres the situation. I have two computers. The one I'm posting this on is fine, working like a charm with my cable modem. But the other computer I have, connected into port two of my D-Link 604 Broadband Router just can't access the internet. This one is also into the router, at port one, and it works fine.
I've tried connecting the cable that is in port two directly into the cable modem, so I am pretty sure it's the settings on that computer. We've fiddled around for a long time, and can't figure it out.
We think it's because that computer used to be set up for dial-up networking, but we're not sure. If anyone could give us a step by step solution as to how to get the internet shared onto the second computer, we'd be thankful. Even a link to a webpage with something that would work would be great.
Thanks in advance.
Dave.

well sorry that i dont have the time to explain it all. would take like 30 mins. but heres something that might help...

and if you narrow your ideas down it would help. my first thing would be to check the identification settings and tcp/ip settings. but check the site.

Do you have internet explorer? Make sure in connections it is setup for lan and automaticly detect. Also goto start/run/type winipcfg and release all renew all.

Hi Dave, well your problem sounds very much like mine - perhaps pooling our brain power might help.
A quick synopsis of my problem below. If you let me have your email perhaps we can exchange emails on our progress / tips that we pick up along the way!!
My set-up:
Desktop PC w(XP) with Network card linked to router
ADSL connection into D-Link DSL-604+ router
Laptop with D-Link DWL-650+ wireless cardI can set-up the router fine, runs all the diagnosis and passes, i can ping ip addresses of web-sites etc. so my router appears fine.
(My laptop connects okay with the router via the wireless card but thats not really the issue here)
My desktop despite seeing the router (i can ping it) cannot ping a website or access any web-site via internet explorer - i have tried all various settings suggested that i can find - but have yet to find the answer. d-link support was awful!! basically told me to run the diagnosis test and when it worked said you're on your own!
yours 'frustrated but determined to find the answer having just blown £300 on all this networking gear!'
My email is tim@elsom.co.uk
