I am replacing my old msn mn-500 wireless router with a new d-link 524 wireless router. My problem is , when the d-link install software trys to configure the 524 it gives an " error not internet connection" message. But yet it is connected to my network.
Also if I try to hook the dsl modem straight in to the ethernet port on my desktop, it says limited or no connectivity and says that no network address has been assigned. But soon as I hook the modem back into the old mn-500 everything is fine and can log on to the internet.
So I am not sure why I can not get my dl-524 to configure and log onto the internet

Try power reset on the modem. Turn it off. connect to the new router (also with power off)
when all connections are made with power off start up each device beginning with the modem then router then PC.
Another possibility is the cable between dsl modem and router. Is it a patch or crossover type? Some routers will autodetect which and re-configure their uplink port to suit. Others cannot adjust the port and require a crossover cable.I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Have you set it for PPoE??? Check the differenc in the configuration for the old router vs. the new??

thanks for the replies,
I have the the yellow patch cable going from the desktop into the router, and the crossover cable ( came with the router) is going from the dsl modem into the router.
I followed the install diagram to get the above cable configuration.
I'll have to checkout the configuration on the old router and compare to the new one.
oh ,also, when the dl-524 is connected to the network, it shows an " internet gateway" icon in Win xp's "my network connections".
Under the icon it says disabeled.

When you are checking the setup of your old router make an especial note of the WAN MAC address. If your ISP has locked their ID of your setup you might have to clone the MAC into the new router.

alright it is working!, I used the wan mac address from the old router and it worked for the new router
thank you for the help
