I am trying to network my 2 computers so that they can both have internet. I bought a router and I'm suppost to connect my DSL modem into the router, but I have a USB DSL Alcatel Speedtouch modem, and to connect a DSL modem to the router, I need an ethernet DSL modem. I am assuming that I can still share it through the computer that has the connection to the internet. Using the intalation CD, everything is very easy but when I am setting up my main computer, this message comes up that says, "Before connecting the router to your PC. Please disconnect the PPPoE connection provided by your ISP first!" How do I do this??? I have a BellSouth Alcatel SpeedYouch(tm) USB ADSL PPPoA modem. Help me out here.

I forget the address but there is a setup page for the modem, something like 192.168.0.1 and you can disable the PPPoE from there.

Check the modem's setup docs for the correct address.

I could really use a little more information than that.

Sorry Danny. I don't know the actual address for the modem. Maybe your ISP could give it to you.

Once you have that, you can configure it as needed.

What brand and model is your router?

Also, is the message saying to "disconnect" from the Net (end the PPPoE connection) before the install?

Some modems and all routers have a SET UP or UTILITY page that can be accessed from the web browser by typing into the URL space a certain http, like http://192.168.0.1/
or similar, according to your equipment books.
There will be an option to set the type of DSL service you have , such as PPPoE.

You'll need to know the exact port too else it'll default to port 80 where the modem setup page isn't located.

You don't need a port number. Only the address of the setup page which is in the firmware of the modem.

I would call Bell and ask about getting an ethernet dsl modem. This USB will complicate your life. Having a router when you don't need one (you just need a switch or a hub) will complicate life as well.

Okay, this is my percieved setup. I think you are getting that message about PPPoE because your router does not understand the setup you have.

You have your DSL modem, your computer, and a router. So your modem gets the signal, your computer is a bridge, and your router shares/logs on/off the connection. There is a difference between Internet sharing and bridge mode in Windows. Bridge mode means "something else" is doing the connection management (this would be your router).

I am assuming the installation CD you refer to is for the router. Lets leave that aside for the moment. You are not doing a typical setup. If its for the modem - same advice.

You need to make your sharing computer a network bridge so that the router can talk directly to the modem. In fact, unless the modem is already set up this way, you need to make the modem a bridge as well.

Otherwise the modem is assuming it is directly connected to a computer that controls the connection. The router does not know how to act this way, it only knows how to log on/off and be at the end of your network. So we need to give the router all the control and make the modem and the computer refer to the router.

Now the step that is going to get at you in this setup is putting the modem in bridge mode. Seawatch has the right idea - its a webpage you can access from a computer. The easiest way to find the address is to go to your ISP's website and search the tech support on how to do this. You can call and see if they know how. Also go to dslreports.com and the forum for your specific ISP there may be able to help.

Once the modem is in bridge mode, Windows must also be set up. I am unfamiliar how to do this in 2000. Google and dslreports should further help you there. Windows XP has it as an option. Use Help and Support. Be sure to give the computer a different IP address than the router (192.168.1.2, for ex.).

For the router, the documention should have a network address for the router. 192.168.1.1 is common (for Linksys anyway). Type that in a browser address bar of a computer attached to the router (just attach your router via ethernet to your computer).

Now, how to setup the router is all in its documention. All you have to do is put in the default user and password, go to a setup screen, punch in your ISP username and password, and select PPPoE (PPPoA if its there). Save your options and put the whole mess together.

Your dsl modem goes into the phone jack. It connects to your windows box bridging the connection to your router. You router logs on via PPPoE automatically. Good luck.
