Disable Internet access except when on VPN

Specs: Windows 7 x86
Hey Guys,

Basically, what I am wanting to do is, is to completley block all connections to any external servers on a local machine except for when the user is connected to the VPN. So, in effect, the user cannot go online, or check emails unless they are connected to the VPN. They are all running Windows 7 Pro.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Use a router with filtering software to block all URLs except your VPN address?

Not sure if that works but worth a try. My D-Link has a domain filtering option that can be set to deny access to all domains except those listed in the "Approved" list.

Such a filter would block off automatic updates as well as web browsing so it might not be your best solution. You could always put the antivirus & Windows update sites in your approved list. Of course you would need a strong password on your router admin interface and some way to keep the users from physically resetting the router if you are not there to keep tabs on the users in person.

Thanks for your reply, but I wanted to block it on the local machine, as they will be moving their notebooks around to other public locations. So when they are out of the office, they must vpn in in order to access anything.

Any other suggestions would still be very helpful.
