i'd like to direct connect two computers with an ethernet cable. can it be done,,,,how?

is 10/100/1000 better than 10/100, or is 10/100 all i'll ever need?

Basic networking requires only 10/100 NICs in each machine and a CROSSOVER ethernet cable.
XP has a networking walkthrough in the Help & Support menu

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.
