Comment:
win98 on old laptop is configured for direct cable connection as host and when activated "listens" winxp on new pc is set as guest. Guest tries to dial, win98laptop/host goes from "listening" to "verifying user name and password" guest pc gives error 777 failed because modem or other connecting device on the remote computer is out of order. But as I said the remote/host computer is diligently listening and trying to verify user name and password. Is the guest pc suppossed to be "dialing" or looking for a modem with a direct cable connection?

XP doesent like direct connection, wht sort of cable you using, if ethernet is avaliable buy a small switch and 2 etherhet cables, much easier and saves lots of trouble.
