The word ethernet has multiple meanings. Greek for air, now it can mean cable or protocol.

Cables are cables in that they are a physical media [OSI model]. Difference is pinouts and number of lines.

Then you have to consider topology like Thick Net, Thin net, Token Ring... stuff you study in school. But I ramble on. Perhaps this will help
