Difference between NetBios name and host

What is the difference between a Netbios name (computer name), and the host name? From what I know, they are usually the same to prevent confusion, netbios name being what others see as your computer name, and the host name as the non-domain part of the FQDN. Is this accurate? What is the point of having a different host name?
