Hi,
Does any one of you happen to know what is the difference between Internet (capital I) and internet (small i). I am a student of BCA and was asked this question in one of my exams. I have noted that I is always capital in spelling of Internet, but don't know what is difference.
Thanks,
Ravish Bhagdev(ravish007@msn.com).

There is no difference between Internet and internet. Are you sure they weren't asking the difference between Internet and intranet? Maybe you misread because you where stressed out for the exam or the person who made the exam made a spelling mistake.

Go to www.whatis.com to find out what Internet and intranet are.

Mik

I think the question was spelled wrong.
The question should be internet and intranet
intranet = usually the LAN within the office
internet = world wide web

Internet is a name... when i write my name, the first is always in capital.

Saying "the internet" is wrong

the question was not worded wrong, it is a valid question. Internet with capital'I' refers to the internet as in the world wide web, and what most people think of when you say internet. internet with a small 'i' refers to a bunch of small LANS connected togetehr to form some kind of host-to-host packet delivery service. so basically Internet capital I refers to internetworking at the global level. whereas small i refers to it on a much smaller level. so the question was not worded incorrectly and i hope that clears it up for you

There is no difference between Internet and internet as far as function. Their is a difference however between Internet and an Intranet which is typically an inter-office situation using Local Access Network (LAN). Grammatically speaking, the Internet should always be spelled out with a capital "I" since it is generally regarded as a proper noun. Hope this clears up some misconceptions that I've seen posted above.

Who cares that Internet is a proper noun? Laser is an abbreviation, but we no longer write it "LASER". Internet declines to be a proper name. Do you agree?

PS Some people sanctify Inet, so they can't write it using small letter

Jeff is absolutely right! The difference is Internet with capital'I' refers to the internet as in the world wide web, and internet with a small 'i' refers to a bunch of small LANS connected together! I was also asked that in my exam!

internet focuses on physical and technical networks while the web focuses on the set of content accessible on the physical and technical infrastructure
