Hello all! I am having some trouble distinguishing between WINS and DNS. I know that they both deal with names and ip addresses, but I'm not seeing the main difference between the 2. Can anyone help?

i look up help topics on the start menu to give clues-but basically dns configures name to ip resolution so its turns www.hello.com into 145.34.45.2 or whatever it is.wins is for resolving netbios names made by netware so wins achieves different system operating compatability

WINS deals with ip to your computer names(or so called netbios names). Example, MyComputer. DNS deals with ip to your domain names. Example, mycomputer@yahoo.com.
You can resolve Netbios names with LMHOSTS file, DNS names with HOSTS file. In Win9X, they are in c:\windows, and 2k/xp, they are in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc. These files got no extensions, the lmhosts.sam and hosts.sam are example files.
