By the way, this isn't a cross post - i misposted to the win9x forum =(
Can anyone sort this one out? I'm trying to connect to a friend's computer (a local call) via dial-up networking and dial-up server. We can establish a connection, but we only get a speed of 26,200 bps every time - funny, cos we both connect to our isp's at about 50kbps. This leads me to think it's not a modem config problem, but something to do with the dial-up or the server itself. Has anyon out there connected at a faster speed than 26k? If so, could you tell me how? I'm using TCP/IP only, with log on to network off and with software compression on.

The max speed you can expect on a modem to modem call using 56k modems is 31.2k. This is because you have 2 analogue to digital conversions on the link, whereas on a ISP call there is only one conversion. Not all people realise that on a ISP call, the upstream max is 56k, but downstream is 31.2k
