Hi:

I have networked 4 windows 2000 computers to share DSL by setting up NAT. Now, my question is can I provide dial up access to these machines or do I need a static IP to dial into a machine?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ram.

Ram,

When you say Dial-Up, to someone like me coming from the networking world, I assume Remote Access via a modem and telephone lines. If this is what you are asking, then it is possible, by setting up remote access with Win2k and routing services. Remote host can then dial up and negotiate using PPP and talk directly with your box.
If you mean through DSL or Cable WWW access, then you are talking VPN. The answer to this is yes. You must, however, place your VPN access server into what is labeled the DMZ on your NAT router. This way, all requests for VPN access will be forwarded to the Win2k box. BUT: This will open up ALL ports, leaving your system wide open to attack, unless you apply firewall software or ACL's on the router.
Another way is to only have your NAT router allow port the PPTP protocol on port 1723 to pass through. Just forward all TCP port 1723 requests to the win2k box and it should work.
