I am having trouble with my router. When I disconnect it and hook my cable modem directly to my computer, my internet won't work. But if I hook the router back up, the internet works fine. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to disconnect the router and have internet

Try this out. In Windows XP Pro, after switching to direct connection to cable modem, go to Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right-click on LAN and select 'Repair'.

Some Cable and DSL ISP's networks associate the MAC address of the NIC card with the MAC address of the Modem, and talk to the NIC by its MAC address. The router has its own NIC address. If this is your problem, then when you remove the router, this association is broken. And the ISP will not talk to the new MAC address connected.
Sometime, powering the modem off for an hour or so will cause the ISP's routing tables to drop the connection. Then when powered on, the change is picked up and it works. Sometimes the modem has to be powered off over night. With a few ISP's, you have to call them and have them reset your connection to make this switch. Can be a real pain.

With my ISP I can register 2 MAC addresses. 1 for the router and 1 for my computer. This solved my similar problem.
If you can't do that, you'll have to contact them and set it up for your computer. Some ISP's also allow you to make these changes on your own on the web without having to call them.
