Hey everyone, I have a question about my router.
My brother donated a router to the family and it had no problems where he was in college. Our current network setup is as follows:
3 computers (hardwired)
1 laptop (wireless)
AT&T DSL service with modemOnce connected, the setup works for about an hour. After 1 hour, the router loses connection with all of the computers and the activity light on the DSL modem goes blank. I've tried many things to troubleshoot the problem.
1) Power-cycled the router and modem
2) Reset the router and modem several times
3) Used another D-link router at hand (same problem)But the problem persists. The router works for a short period of time then craps out.
All computers are running Windows XP Professional.
Anyone have any insight to help fix this problem?I know that both the DSL modem and the router have the same IP address, the default that most networking hardware have, but when I changed the router's IP to 192.168.0.X (any number besides 1) the computers couldn't access the internet. Changed it back to 1, and access was restored and the problem came back.
Any help is appreciated!

There may be a time out setting in the configuration, but would that make the router invisible to the computers connected? When the problems occur, both hardwired computers are unable to access the router at the default IP

You really should not have the router and modem on the same IP address. Change the router to 192.168.1.1 and find out if that will work or why it doesn't work if it doesn't. Does the router have DHCP? If so it should be assigning itself as Gateway in TCP/IP settings on each computer. You can try the Ping command on both router and modem IP address. They should not be the same.
Compaq Presario SR1720NX Desktop Computer
AT&T SBC Yahoo DSL Home
Linksys Router/2 computers

Suspect there is IP conflict on your network. A quick test you can try, assign 192.168.0.253 to router, then configure all other connected computer with gateway 192.168.0.253. See whether it solve the problem.
Also read the router manual on how to configure it.. Here is a quick help on how to configure wireless router, can have a look if you like. Hope helps..

Changed the router's IP to 192.168.1.1 and all works fine now.
I was changing the 4th value before...something that I now know not to do. Thanks for all of your help. And yes I actually do read the manual and the router's log file thank you.
