I was having intermittent problems with connections on my xp computer. The modem is connected directly to my onboard ethernet port. I ran the network diagnostics in XP's help and support and everything passed except this:

[00000001] Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC (FAILED)

When I opened that tab it showed this as the only failure:

DHCPServer = 192.168.1.1 (FAILED)
Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

Everything else passed, just this DHCP server. What does this mean? Is it an internet issue, modem issue, ethernet port issue?

Thanks

Update, I opened the command prompt and did the ping 127.0.0.1 which is supposed to test my NIC and it came back as 4 packets send and received, no losses so I think the NIC is fine. Also, I'm using Zone alarm but I deactived it for the test.

Otherwise, I can access the internet fine, get my mail, etc, just wonder what this DHCP server failure could be.

This could be DHCP server on your modem.
Just check settings of your modem and make sure DCHP server is turned off

Take a breath...
