Hello i thought i would write here first before calling the tech help line as it cost £1 per min.

On my dads comp i am trying to install cable modem but everytime i install the CD it comes up with:
DHCP release/renew failed
Detected 1 DHCP network adapter
USB ????(the make of usb)

I have tryed reinstalling win 98. Dad has USB port and NIC i tryed with both in then tryed them seperate. Also tryed uninstalling network protocols and reinstalling them. Tryed taking all network stuff out and putting it in 1 at a time.
I even tryed putting an ip address from my comp to his.

As we have vertually the same hardware i tryed configured all network stuff from my comp to his.

I also do everything the cd tells me to do shut down AVG and firewalls etc.. I once shut down everything but explorer.

What ever i use USB or NIC i get same prob all the time but only thing changes is either the 2 problems below:

DHCP release/renew failed
Detected 1 DHCP network adapter
USB ????(the make of usb)

DHCP release/renew failed
Detected 1 DHCP network adapter
NIC ????(the make of NIC)

I also got the latest drivers installed

So in other word i tryed everything i know but still nothing, if ya can help that would be Great.

Win 98, NTL cable modem make is terayon. NIC make is realtek RTL8139. USB is onboard. ALL protocols needed is installed.

I have virus scaned comp i have had norton utilites search for errors, scan disk, Reinstalled win 98 more than 3 times.

At dos prompt, type: route print

and verify the routing table to see if the NIC is set as autoconf.

Most cable modems have a set of indicatior lights showing power, connection to cable network, connection to local network and send/receive.

Make sure that your cable network light is active (lit). Often times this is the trouble.

Also, sometimes the cable providers require a uniquely assigned name to be used. Be sure the PC "name" is set correctly if necessary.

Try resetting the modem with an oft hidden reset button on the back. this will make the modem re-find the MAC address of the computer it is hooked to. then try renewing your ip address
