Hello,
I am trying to set up a DHCP server on my w2000 server box. I can't seem to figure it out, all my setting look correct and everything is green on the servers end. But on the second computer (which is connected to the first via cat5 cable) is simply doesn't even see anything connected to that port, it thinks its unplugged. Does anyone know of any guide that can guide me through setting up DHCP or know why the second computer thinks the network cable is unplugged?

Thank you!

Do you mean to say that the second computer is plugged via CAT5 directly to the server? You'll need a crossover cable, not a standard CAT5.

Thanks Kevin, that fixed the problem. I never heard of this type of cable. Unfortuantly, I've run into another problem. I set up my DHCP server to lease IPs from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254 and turned ICS on for the second NIC card. Secondly, I plugged in the second PC with the crossover cable I bought today and the second PC recogzines it. Even shows that it is recieveing/sending bytes in LAC status window. Unfortuantly, I cannot access the internet on this second PC. I've tryed releasing and renewing the Ip, and rebooting the second PC. Still it will not display a webpage. Everything is OK and green on the DHCP servers side, even shows the leased IP of 192.169.0.2 -- Do you know what might cause this not to work?

Thank you again!

With a small LAN I would go with static IP's. Especially if you're using ICS. My preference with 2000 server is RRAS. I highly recommend you do a little reading in the help files and at MS's web site on setup/configuration of RRAS. It works far better than ICS and if you have highspeed internet as compared to dialup, it's well worth your while to check it out.

In the mean time, shut off DHCP and statically assign the clients TCP/IP info including the gateway address (192.168.0.1) and for the DNS address settings, use the DNS addresses of your ISP.
