OS is Win 2000 pro
2 NIC cards - one for Cable; one for LAN
LAN has static address of 192.268.0.1
Cable has dhcp allocator
The LAN clients (mixed win2000 and 98) can ping all LAN machines but cannot see the internetSystem log shows the following msg
The DHCP allocator has disabled itself on IP address 203.164.77.61, since the IP address is outside the 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 scope from which addresses are being allocated to DHCP clients. To enable the DHCP allocator on this IP address, please change the scope to include the IP address, or change the IP address to fall within the scope.also shows Ipnathlp as the problem area Event ID 30013.
Since this is 2000 Pro I cannot see how i can change scope.
What have I done wrong?

There is no DHCP server - when ICS (NAT) is enabled in Win2k Pro - a fairly basic DHCP allocator is started.

What kind of connection do you have? Cable or DSL maybe? You might want to look into Cable/DSL routers (usually has built in NAT) which you can configure to be your DHCP server and have your machines to automatically obtain an IP address to make things easier. 8wire.com has a lot of cable/dsl router reviews that you might want to check out.

Did you check off ICS on the right adapter? You should use it on the public(Internet) interface.. DHCP proxy should be running on the private(LAN) interface not the internet one... then make sure all clients have their tcp/ip settings to obtain address automatically.

Thanks Bobronco --- If you check ICS on the internet adapter its address gets changed to 192.168.... so the WAN becomes inaccessible. W2kPro does this as soon as you select ICS. Thus the ICS has to checked on the LAN side and the local addresses are in the local range and the DHCP shares WAN addresses.I think your suggestion is good - but it can't work that way - or if it can I am missing something.
Scotch - It is a cable - I was trying to use the software solution inherent in Win2kPro. But - I will look at a hardware solution if this is unresolvable.

I have this set up at home and I'm sure that you set the internet adapter to ICS then it automatically sets the LAN adapter to the default gateway address to 192.168.0.1 and also turns the LAN adapter into a DHPC allocater and a DNS forwarder. Try this.

Bobronco - thanks again.
This was sufficiently puzzling that I woke up this morning and you are 90% correct - only the DHCP allocator is on the WAN side. Without the assistance of you and the others who responded - I would have another restless night tonight.
