Comment:

I am currently experiencing Delayed Write Failed errors when saing reasonable large files over a network share. I have googled a lot and tried several things including:

Disabling write cache on host drives
Updating NIC drivers
Forcing both NICs and the switch to the same network speed

and nothing seems to work. The error log has Event ID 50, soure MRxSmb and the data ends c000020c (some solutions are for an error ending c000022c).

For some reason the problem seems worse since the machine joined the domain, as opposed to being a workgroup PC - not sure if it is related. I have checked all permissions etc.

Any help would be really appreciated, I just can't find a solution anywhere.

Thanks for the link but I have worked through all of those suggested solutions with no luck.

I have just tried dragging and dropping a file onto the network share (as opposed to saving from an application) and although this time it copied fine it took several minutes for a 30Mb which is an incredibly long time, so there seems to be a general speed issue too.

Even at 100 Mbps, 30 Mb's of data shouldn't take more than a few seconds to copy by dragging and dropping.

Something is definately up with your network but with zero information on your network setup, helping you troubleshoot the issue is going to be a slow painful process.

So, if you want some help, give us some details on your setup.
- Number of clients
- Number and type of devices between the two clients you're copying from/to
- Type of software you're saving from and where does the data get saved to (when trying to save from the software itself as compared to dragging and dropping files)
- What speed NIC's, switch, router etc?
- What are you showing for connection rate with all connected client devices
- How is your network setup (ie: internet >> SOHO router >> switch >> clients)

We have in excess of approximately 15/18 PCs running Windows XP SP2 connectes via a Netgear switch to a Windows 2003 server. The switch is connected to the internet via a linksys router. All PCs are workgrouped except for one, which is running as a client to a domain on the same server sharing the same resources, on which this issue occurs.

This is a 'test' PC as I want to move all onto the domain the the new year.

We run a variety of software - I noticed the issue when trying to save an image from photoshop onto one of the server's shared drives. Nobody else has had this issue on their workgrouped PCs, saving the same sort of documents on the same drive.

The PC in question is set up as a domain administrator and has full access to the domain.

If there is anything else I have missed please let me know, and thank you for having a look at this problem, I can't find anyway around it.

Have you tested the network cable? If it is faulty, it could be the source of the problem.

Use a packet sniffer such as wireshark to capture the network traffic during the file transfer and see if there is any out of the ordinary traffic, such as large amounts of retransmissions.

What FishMonger said!

What is the bandwidth capacity of that switch (100/1000 Mbps)? Also, what's the capacity of the NIC in the PC in question?

Check to see what the NIC's connected at. If it's not the maximum available (based on NIC and switch capacity) then check to ensure it's set to 'auto' for it's speed and see if that changes what it connects at.

If the cable's good, and you're connected at the maximum rate (based on Switch/NIC speeds) then you may have a bad NIC or possibly a bad port on the switch.

The latter is easy to test. Move that connection to another port. Does the problem go away? Yes - that was the issue, problem is solved just make a note to not use that port again. No - then test the NIC in the PC.

Oh and thanks for the details, it makes a huge difference! :)

Some progress...

I uninstalled and reinstalled the network card (last time I just updated the drivers) and it seems to have helped. I had forced the network to a 100/1000 speed at both the pc, switch and server, and I have changed that back too. (That was an attempted fix for the delayed write failed error).

I now can copy over files much quicker, and when i just tried to save my test image from photoshop it worked (albeit still slower than I am sure it used to be).

It is strange as I am sure this is the same setup as originally, when the problem first occured, but if it wants to work i am not going to question it! As I say it still seems a little sluggish saving, especially direct from Photoshop. I installed Wireshark and set it running monitoring my network card as I saved but I am afraid I have no way of interpreting the results - what am i looking for?

Also, i changed the network cable which made no difference, still to try the port.

Thanks for all your help, not sure if I am able to get online over xmas so hopefully this won't just die on here - any further advice you might have would be most appreciated.
