Ok guys, need your help again.

Recently someone broke into our router, companies all around us, and residential less than 300 feet.

Turned broadcast SSID wireless off, which was the mode they were accessing; this router came from another office with the default settings.

However, all issues have been solved, however, the default linksys password of nothing for user name and admin for password does not work any more, I have my password and have changed same for security reasons, but waas curious why the default password isn't working any more, as a lot of times I use this if my passcode book is unavailable and would still like to use the default password at times.

Any explanation as to why it is not working and are there any ot her default pass codes for linksys I could use; or tell me what they could have changed in the router to make the default not work.

Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, on the Linksys Routers I've used there is only 1 account. When you changed the password to your password, that change the administrator account to have your password.

It would make no sense, whatsoever, to leave the default username/password active. Then anyone could access your router.

Thanks, that's another mode, my stupidity, they probably took off the password to make it default back to admin.

It was quite frightening to watch them change settings right before my eyes as I watched. I had to act quick.

They also changed net access for the router which I quickly changed.

I had strong passwords for the router, however,we have a business next door which in that line of business every one has a laptop and u know every one of them has a wifi or wireless card inevitably.

I have made sure broadcast is off ond both my home and at work and we are flying, at home I had a wireless card and went to encryption for a while but it would not work with encryption, what could I also use when I would have to turn it on either here or at home, work unlikely home maybe - WEP, Wap, ?

Thanks again and for responding so propmtly!!!!

Sounds to me like you have been operating without any form of encryption simply because you could not get your settings correct when you tried to enable it. Having "strong passwords" on the router admin is pointless if you are running an open unsecured accesspoint.

You should enable at least 128bit WEP or if your client machines can do it, use WPA/PSK.

The settings in client systems have to be exactly right or you won't be able to connect but that's the point of security encryption.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

The SSID portion is off, I had it on my home system when I had a mixed wired and wireless; however, work is wired only, so SSID (broadcast) wireless radio is off.

I set up encryption on my home system with wired on though. Didn't think u needed it with (broadcast) SSID turned off!

I thought u only needed that if u are wireless (wireless or wireless mixed)!!

In routers I've used there are two different settings. One to enable/disable wireless and another once wireless is enabled, to either broadcast SSID or not. If your router does not have an option to completely disable wireless then you should enable some form of security encryption even if you aren't broadcasting the SSID.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.
