What are the pro's or con's of moving DHCP to my new server2003 PC. I have tried to move it but encountered problems (i since have read blogs on proper setup) so when i get home i will give it another shot. But my main question now is why should i move it if my router is doing a fine job? This is for Home Network.

Background: The main purpose for the Server2003 OS is for filesharing/disk storage. Keep all photos / kids homework, etc on 1 central repository and limit visibility/access rights, etc... Hence i am really going after the DC (active directory) features.

My Setup: CableModem > Router (linksys BEFSR41) > 8-port switch (trendNet - 1gb). The server is connected to the switch (not the router) as well as 4 other PC (XP-Pro) (xbox, etc).
thanks

My recommendation, since you are not using the Server as your internet portal, simply as a file storage device, is to leave it as just another client on the router and let your router handle the DHCP duties.

Not sure if it makes much difference but if you are going to be mapping drives across your network you may want to consider assigning static IPs anyway.
