Define data link cable. That covers a multitude of possibilities.

If you mean a Cat5 network cable connected between two Network Interface Cards, then you need a crossover cable as apposed to the straight through cable that is used to connect a computer to a router, switch, hub or modem.

Oh that's simple, first you buy a NIC and a Cat5 network cable. Then you plug into a hub or switch that your friend is plugged into. Or, if it's just going to be the two of you, buy a crossover cable and plug directly from your NIC to his NIC and VOILA! You have a LAN.

Curt's solution is the simplest. To use the USB cable you are going to need Ethernet to USB converters. Better to use an Ethernet link in the first place.

Try to understand US! It can NOT be done that simply.

Essentially, you bought a gallon of gas to get to work, BAD NEWS, You need to buy a car to put the gas into!

A USB port and a LAN port have 2 different purposes. You absoluteley MUST have 2 NIC cards! Then get a CAT5 cable and connect the two. A LOT cheaper than a USB cable and will reach a lot farther.

If you insist on using the USB cable, get 2 Ethernet to USB converters (in addition to the 2 NICs) then you can use your beloved USB cable.

There are USB cables that can be used for connectiong two computers, but they cost around $30 US and then you can play games across this pP2P.

But you cannot use a regular USB cable.

not a regular cat5 cable but one that is wired differently. It looks like a regular cat5 cable, however.

It's called a cross-over cable.
