i have a problem im trying to share files between my xp pc and vista laptop but im having issues ive set them 2 different ip adresses but the same subnet mask it says network connected but i cant acces the shared folders i did it on an older pc by typing // then the other pcs name in the fun box but now it will now work PLEASE HELP

same workgroup? same user account and password on both? both have something shared? shares are to everyone with no restrictions? windows and/or firewall software disabled or configured to trust the subnet/host names?

There are 3-4 types of file sharing on Vista, take a look on articles here, might be able to solve your issue.
