A patch cable is designed to connect two dis-similar devices (e.g. a NIC and a hub) and a crossover cable is designed to connect to similar devices (e.g. a NIC to a NIC or a hub to a hub). Good enough?
Most client devices (NIC's) transmit on pins 1 & 2 (orange and orange/white) and receive on pins 3 & 6 (green and green/white). Hubs (or switches) transmit on 3 & 6 and receive on 1 & 2.
Therefore, a standard patch cable is straight-through, and a crossover cable swaps those two pairs.
