Hello. I am trying to transfer files using a crossover cable between 2 laptops, both running windows xp, home. ip addresses are set as:
cp 1: 192.168.0.1
cp 2: 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 (on both)
Workgroup name is the same on both computers. The computer names are different.
Computer (CP) 1 can ping itself but not CP 2. CP 2 can ping both itself and CP 1. Both CPs 1 and 2 can see eachother in explorer under the workgroup but neither can access the others files. Message received: You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Both computers have the firewall disabled and file sharing enabled (folder is specified as shared on respective CPs). Have tried disabling other connections (1394 and wireless) leaving only the LAN connection enabled. Have also tried turning on guest accounts on both laptops. Is there anything that I am missing to see files on the other laptop?
Thank you for your help.

I'm kinda having the same prob with my laptop.
First of all: 1394 is your FireWire port, so no need to touch that.
next you should have a router between the computers. Works best as far as I know.
Then you should check what kind of connections you have: are they firewalled? if so the file sharing thing is almost for sure activated. Otherwise it's not.

As I mentioned. I have the same prob on my laptop. pretty weird, cuz all the other settings and services are up and running.

I was under the assumption that the whole point of using the crossover cable was to avoid the use of a router. If I had a router, why wouldn't I just use regular ethernet cables?

I have previously tried with windows firewall both up and down on the LAN connection, but get progress with neither. File sharing has been enabled on both laptops, both through the LAN Connection and with individual folders that are set to shared.

Problem has been solved. Computers needed to be setup with crossover cable disconnected, then rebooted, connecting the cable on reboot. Configuration used is as listed in original message. No router needed.
