I have a 2wire modem plugged into my cpu through usb and a couple laptops use it through wifi. Anyways I noticed when my main cpu is not turned on(the one that the modem is plugged directly into), my connection is normal around 3555kbps according to my http://gateway.2wire.net page. But when I turn on the main cpu it drops down to around 1700-2000kbps. Anyone know why this is happening? Kind of wierd, since this use to be the fastest cpu in the house.

Anyways Thanks:)

For a start you don't have your modem plugged into your CPU. Your modem is plugged into your computer. A CPU is the main chip inside the computer.

Have you done a virus/spyware scan. You could have something trying to phone home as soon as the computer is turned on.

No. CPU means Central Processing Unit. The bit that does all the processing usually made by Intel or AMD. The rest, the memory, the hard disk, the motherboard are just for storing and moving data from one place to another. All combined make a computer.

We're from two different worlds, anyways Ive done virus check and everything, other than a few tracking cookies, nothing was picked up. Ive reset my connection and it still happens when the main computer turns on. Could it be the modem getting old? Its 6yrs old or close. Ive looked into about everything the settings all seem to be normal.

Mines the real one. I don't know which one you are from.

It is unlikely to be the Modem. If it were all computers would be affected not just the wired one.

Download and run Netlimiter. The free version will be good enough to tell you what is using the network.

Well I did that and everything looks fine.m Im going to reformat next week since this thang is so slow anymore, its pretty overloaded that its becoming annoying lol. Maybe thatll fix the internet too. I did a line test and a few others tests over at dslreports.com and everything passed.
