Hi,
I have Cox High Speed Internet and I using Motorola Modem. Can I connect two computers to the modem at the same time (one through the USB and the other through the ethernet cable)?. If not, how can I make the internet work when changing the cable from one computer to the other without disconnecting the modem's power.thank you in advance.

It's been a while since I last answered a question like this (I used to work in technical support for the entire @home line of cable internet)
It's possible to connect both computers to the modem at the same time, but I don't think you can do it with USB and ethernet (if I'm wrong, somebody correct me)
As far as I know you'll need an ethernet card in both computers an a hub/switch/router.
If you don't have access to that and have to switch the cable modem between two computers you shouldn't have to touch the modems power cable (unless you have to move the modem).
If both computers are running Windows XP/2000 then they should automatically find an IP address and be ready to browse. If you're running Windows 9x/ME then you'll need to run a program called "winipcfg" and do a release/renew on your ethernet adapter to pull a new IP address and get online. (If you do have to release/renew, then make sure that you have your ethernet adapter selected, not a PPP adapter)
If Cox is still running off the same IP group then you should see an IP address of 24.x.x.x
if you have that, you should be go to go. I hope I wasn't too confusing for you._kyle

I am using Win 2000 on one and XP Pro on the other. My Adapter is "VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter". Could you elaborate more on how to do the release renew based on this information.
thanx.

First, you can't share the cable modem by using the ethernet and usb ports at the same time. If you want to alter between them, for 2K or XP you need to do the release/renew from the command line. Open up a DOS box and type, without quotes, "ipconfig /release," ENTER, then "ipconfig /renew," ENTER. This will renew the DHCP lease but I don't know if it will solve your problem. You may still need to reboot the computer and/or power cycle the modem. A much better way to do share your connection is to use a router to or buy and hub and enable ICS on the host computer attached to the cable modem.
