Could my Linksys state it is a 'hub, but actually be a switch?

Thats unlikely. A switch is a piece of technology far superior to a hub - that'd have to be a BIG mistake on Linksys's part! Clients on a hub have only the total bandwidth alotted to thim divided among all of the systems on that hub; switches manage to boost the signal to allow full bandwidth to all clients on the switch.
