Of course you the home PC will need to be running WinXP Pro in order to use Remote Desktop.
An alternative would be TightVNC. It's free and fairly easy to use. It will need to be installed on both machines (host and client) and you will need the Admin at work to allow the connection.

depends on the OS of both machines, how each connects to the internet, whether or not you use a router, a firewall, etc... As you can see, more detials are needed before it can be correclty answered.
