My laptop has a working internet connection
as I can ping websites at the command prompt fine - but web browsers time out and won't load web pages. It used to work intermitently on wireless but always worked on ethernet.

I've reinstalled the network adapters and tried using Firefox, IE and Opera - no luck on any of them.

Help would be greatly appreciated

Turn off the firewall(s). If that doesn't help, try using a static IP and a static DNS setting.

If you can ping a web site the firewall isn't the issue.

Start with doing your routine maintenance.
update and scan for spyware
update and scan for virus's
run chkdsk /r from a cmd prompt, answer yes to the question and reboot so it runs
run disk cleanup from the system tools menu
run defragmenter from the same menu

How do you connect to the internet? Do you have a router?

Go to a cmd prompt and type ipconfig /all then post the results for review here.

Imagine the power of knowing how to internet search

Hello,
Does anyone else have any ideas??

Thanks for the advice, but my spyware and antivirus are up to date and I don't think defragmenting the hardrive will help either.

It doesn't matter if i use wireless or ethernet i still have the same problem.

Does anyone else have any suggestions???

Do you know if your DNS is correctly set up. Your problem sounds like a DNS failure. If you run ipconfig, does it show IP addresses for DNS servers? Are they the correct IP addresses? Those addresses are provided by your ISP.
