I've run into a problem at work that has us stumped. Last Friday, my PC refused to connect to the Internet. I can open IE 6, and will get the following: Web site found, waiting for reply. This will go on for up to 30 minutes, at which time I click on stop and close IE. I can ping and tracert Internet addresses with some success. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This problem has now appeared on a second PC. Both PCs, plus 5 or 6 other ones, are networked through a gateway PC that has the direct DSL connection. This PC is running Zone Alarm Pro v 1.0.111 (yes, I know it's an OLD version). All of the PCs have been rebooted, plus the Cisco 675.
I've tried releasing and renewing the IP addresses, and get a message that the IP address for the adapter has already been released. When I try to renew it, I get a message that the DHCP server is not available.
Full system scans with up to date virus (NAV) and trojan (The Cleaner) definitions finds nothing. All systems are running Win Me.
HELP!

I don't know that much about dsl, but it
sounds like a dns problem to me. Have you
contacted the isp yet?

I did contact them. They were no help, since our gateway PC, and other PCs on our LAN can reach the Internet. They figure it has to be a networking problem, and they don't troubleshoot those.

Reread the post again. Did you check in
zone alarm if >allow connect< is green
checked and not red xed?

ZA is checked green. I've even tried turning it off. I'm thinking the next step might be to uninstall it. I'm just not sure where the install program is to put it back, since it's the Pro version, I can't just download it again.

How about the LAN performance of these pc's - can they transfer files from each other at expected speeds, without problems? If not, reninstall NIC drivers & TCP/IP, then check for flaky patch cables. Once LAN performance is OK, then try troubleshooting from that point on.

I can't judge the LAN performance of the PCs relative to each other as there are no shares between any of them. There isn't really a server, in the traditional sense. The only thing they all access in common is a RISC6000 box running our accounting software. The connections to that seem fine. Outside of that, the PCs are really standalone systems sharing an Internet connection.

Where is your dhcp server? If you can't renew your ip, it seems that would be a problem. Also, are you running a dns server on your internal network, or is dhcp configured with your isp's dns addresses?
CJ

When I run winipcfg on our gateway PC, the DNS server is that of our ISP. The DHCP server is an internal address, the same as the default gateway.

Update. I have uninstalled the old version of Zone Alarm Pro, and upgraded to a newer release. I have also been able to release and renew for my system's IP address in winipcfg. I did this by removing on reinstalling the network adapter. I am still unable to connect to any web sites, even though I can ping them.
The gateway PC is running ICS, and shows the following under winipcfg. The DNS Server is that of our ISP. The node type is Broadcast. IP Routing Enabled is checked. The Ethernet Adapter Information shows the adapter as ICSHARE Adapter, with an IP Address of 10.195.xxx.xxx. The subnet mask is 255.255.255.248. The default gateway and DHCP Server are the same at 10.195.xxx.xxx, but this is different that the IP address above. There is another adapter available, a Network Fast Ethernet Adapter. It shows as IP address of 192.168.xxx.xxx, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and no default gateway or DHCP server entry.
On my PC, I show the DNS server is the 192.168.xxx.xxx IP address of the gateway PC. This same address shows for the default gateway and DHCP server. The node type is hybrid.
Any ideas why I still cannot connect out?

OK try this go to network and select you lan. On the left side of the screen choose to disable the network. Once it has disabled then re enable it. It sounds foolish ( I know ) but it works. I still can't figure out why but it may just solve you problem.

I don't see anything like what you're describing. The system in question is running Win Me. I'm assuming you mean Settings >> Control Panel >> Network? I have removed the NIC and reinstalled it multiple times.

Have you tried connecting your computer directly to the DSL modem to rule out the network. Do both computers, that are having the problem, have ZoneAlarm installed or does the gateway PC have the ZoneAlarm on it? So you cant browse in IE but you can ping IP's(1.2.3.4)and Hosts names(www.yahoo.com)? Is it intermittent? Do you have or tried Netscape. Have you tried repairing IE in Add/Remove Programs- Double Click on Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools>select Repair>Restart when it tells you to. Delete Temporary Internet Files, History, and Cookies in Internet Options. In Internet Options check the Connections tab and make sure Never dial a connection is selected, and the click on LAN Settings button and make sure there are No checked boxes. Internet Options on the Privacy tab have it set to Medium, Security tab click on Reset to Default, Advance tab click on Restore Defaults. Shut IE and reopen it. You put that you have IE 6 and ME came with 5.5 so you upgraded right? So if the Repair didnt work try the Restore the previous Windows Configuration which will revert you back to 5.5.

Moving my PC to another office, or trying to hook it directly to the DSL router, are about the only things I haven't tried. The only system with Zone Alarm Pro is the gateway box. You're right in saying I can't browse in IE, but I can ping both IPs and names. The browse problem is not intermittent. I lost the ability to browse a few weeks ago on a Friday afternoon. Earlier that day, I could browse with no problems. Ever since then, I cannot. I had made no changed to my system that day, or the days right before then.
I have run the repair function for IE6. It was un upgrade from 5.5. I also removed it and went back to 5.5 to no avail. I have deleted the cookies, temp internet files, and history folders. Never dial a connection is checked. I do have Automatically detect settings checked under LAN settings, but I have also tried unchecking it. No difference. I have reset all of the security and privacy options back to their default settings.
I'm about the toss the darn thing out the window (luckily, my office doesn't have any).

Have you tried the Restore function in ME. Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools> Restore. Restore it to a previous date when you were able to browse in IE.
Or it could be a corrupt Winsock2 issue.Go to Start> Settings> Control Panel and then when the Control Panel opens, Double-Click on Add/Remove Programs.
Select the Windows Setup Tab.
Click Communications and Select Details.
On the following screen Uncheck Dialup Networking.
NOTE: If Dialup Networking is already Unchecked, go back one step and Uncheck Communications.Click OK until prompted to reboot and when prompted to reboot Click No.
Click Start >Select Run and Type regedit.Once the Windows Registry Editor opens, BACKUP the registry. DO NOT CONTINUE WITHOUT BACKING UP THE REGISTRY.
Click Registry, and Select Export Registry FileIn the File name: Field, Type a file name such as "regbackup".
Make sure the Export Range is set to All.In the Save as type: Field, make sure Registration Files is Selected.
In the Save in: Field, Select Desktop and Click Save.
Locate the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ SYSTEM/ CurrentControlSet/ Services/ WinSock2
Highlight the Registry key, and then Click Edit on the File Menu and Select Delete.Close the Registry Editor. Restart the computer.
Go back to Start> Settings> Control Panel and then when the Control Panel opens, Double-Click on Add/Remove Programs.
Select the Windows Setup Tab.
Click Communications and Select Details.
On the following screen put back the check for Dialup Networking. Click ok>Click ok>Yes to the restart.Once the computer reboots try browsing.

I did try the Restore function, using two different dates prior to the problem. Neither one worked. I'll try your suggestions about the winsock problem, though I'm not sure how it could effect this, since we're not using dial up networking. I'll let you know. Thanks.

I tried the rest of the steps you suggested. No luck. The browser still won't open any web pages, even though I can ping them by name or IP.

You can try this MS KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q241/3/44.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=winsock&rnk=6&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=WINME.

I have tried entering the numeric IP into the browser. Same result. This has really got me stumped.
I'll take a look at the KB article you posted. Thanks.

In case anyone is still following this thread, the problem is fixed. It turns out we have a bad hub. I moved my connection to an open port on another hub and everything now works. I would have never thought that was the problem since I could connect to our internal Unix system and could ping the external world. Live and learn. Thanks for all the ideas!

Here's one!
I've been trying to help a friend with this one.
Using Win98se, upgraded to ie6 and now can't connect(sympatico) using DSL. Correction, he can connect, verify password, etc, then it just hangs. He can ping any address from a DOS window. Both netscape and explorer hang. He's reinstalled, reverted, and generally cleaned anything he can up.
Any suggestions?

IE6 has a known problem if you have MSN messenger installed.
I have had this problem and I was forced yo remove IE6 and re-install IE5.5The free Opera browser works fine, yet IE6 hangs forever
