i've got 2 machines, on running winXP with 2 network cards (one for connection to the internet, the other one for a LAN connection to another machine running win2k). i've set the IP address to 192.168.0.1 for the XP computer and to 192.168.0.2 for the 2k machine. now if i ping the win2k machine, the ping succeeds, if i try it vice versa, the XP machine doesn't reply. they can't find each other in the network environment either. is there anything obvious i am doing wrong? please help!

Two PCs connected directly together require a crossover cable.

I have a similar problem:

I tried to ping an XP machine via the Internet (I received the IP address via mail)but it always time out. Using the "Tracert" command shows that when the last route to the XP is up for test it shows time out.
The XP can connect to the WIN2000 via NetMeeting but a communication is not possible.

I also had the same problem. I cannot ping my XP machine from a router, but can ping the router from my XP machine.
In the same setup, my 98 machine works both ways.
Could it be OS problem or built-in firewall that XP comes with??

Make sure you don't have the XP firewall configured. It may not respond if you do.
