For howto create a VPN take a look at this site:
http://openvpn.net/

You also need a service, to make your dynamic ip available form any location at the internet.
(Thinking abaut how to figure out the dynamic ip address of the other location)

There are several services you can use without donation like DynDNS, NO-IP a.s.o.

You'll find this services at:
http://www.dyndns.org
http://www.no-ip.com

I hope that helps.

I agree that a properly setup VPN might work. It does take some time to setup. Consider also barracudaserver free versions that use HTTPS to secure the transfer. Others are software like PCanywhere and online services such as gotomypc.

Be sure it is approved with the boss.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

Here I'll describe, how to manage dynamic DNS by using DynDNS.

1. go to http://www.dyndns.org
2. click at "Create Account"
3. fill in the form for creating the account
(the e-mail address must be a valid address)
4. you'll get an email with a link in it, to complete the activation of the new accout
5. after completion, login to new account at the web-site
6. at the left side click on "My Services" and then on "Host Sevices"
7. you'll get a screen with "No Hostnames Registered"
8. click on "Add new Hostname"
9. fill in the hostname you'd like to use, e.g yourhostname
10. choose the domain from the drop down field
(I suggest dyndns.org)
11. click the checkbox for wildcards
12. click on the ip address shown at auto-detected remote ip
13. the rest is ok as it is, so click the button "create new host"

Aoount is created and ready to use.

Now you need a little tool to automatically update this account when your ip changes.

Here you can download this tool.
http://cdn.dyndns.com/dyndns-setup-...

OK

1. download the dyndns update client http://cdn.dyndns.com/dyndns-setup-...
2. extract the achive in a temporary folder
3. start the setup.exe to install the client
4. start the DynDNS Updater
5. click next
6. choose "Local Area Network" and next
7. click on "Detext My IP" and next
8. enter a group name e.g. mygroup and click next
9. enter your username and password and confirm the password. then click next
10. let the client automatically download the account information and click next
11. mark the found hostname and click next
12. enable automatic update and next
13. let the client start at windows startup and next
14. click finish

That's all.

You cannot access your computer from inside your local network by using e.g. youhostname.dyndns.org. This will only work from the internet (outside your local network), but it will work.

Hope that helps :-)

Paul
