I work for a small company that needs to share files between two offices that are located in two different towns. Each office has an existing LAN is there anyway to connect the networks for file sharing as if the two LANS existed on the same network. I've read up on VPN, but I'm not sure thats exactly what I need.

Your options are:
Do Frame Relay T1 between the two sites Do Point to Point T1 between sites Do a VPN between sites.
The first two are done thru your telephone company. The last is done thru your ISP
All three require routers at each end You can get away with no firewall on 1 &2 You MUST have a firewall at each site in addtion to the router if doing a VPN thru the internet.

VPN's require a VPN router on each end a few settings on each of the router.
I'd Recommend looking at ipcop.org. All you would need with ipcop is 2 old desktop computers 200mhz and up preferibly each with 2 network cards.
