I have two SMC RJ45 cards. None of the lights ever come on!
I have a belkin CAT5 patch cable #r7j304 verified (UL).
I have set the two peer-to-peer computers up just like it says at www.tectony.com. Yet I cant ping or see the opposite computer.

Why cant I?
Any help greatfully received!

If the lights don't come on - they're often green in standby on most current cards - then the cards are either dead, or not properly installed.

Check your cards are properly and securely installed.

If your connecting two computers directly,
you'll need a special type of patch cable
called a crossover cable.

Lee,

You need a "crossover" cable. Belkin # A3X126-07-YLW-M, where the "07" refers to the length. See www.belkin.com. The transmit and receive wires are reversed in one plug. This lets you network two computers without a hub.

Good luck.

I have a similar problem. I am using Win 2K Pro and I have a crossover cable but the icon for networking "when connected" shows that the cable is unplugged on each machine even though they are not.
