On the desktop PC, go to printers and faxes. You have to share the printer on the machine that the printer is initially installed on. Then on the laptop go to printers and faxes and select "add a printer". Select networked printer and navigate to the computer name that hosts the printer. the printer should show up in the list. Assuming both machines are running XP the drivers for the printer should transfer and install to the laptop. If not install the drivers for the OS you are using from the disk that came with the printer.
hug_a_cop Did you see anything in the first OP post that says there is a wireless router in the mix? Answer is no. I start at basics and don't assume there is anything more than a pc with a printer and a laptop which is why I asked about a nic in the pc and about internet which would have told us about a router.
