Howdy,
apologies for sounding like an idiot, but I just purchased a new HP laptop, nothing wrong with it, I am just having trouble connecting to my existing home network. It is currently running 2 computers and my Xbox.
My laptop is connected directly through a network cable but when I go through the network setup it doesnt give me an option to connect to the existing network or prompt me with anything regarding it. Is there something I'm not doing?

You don't need the network setup.
Change the workgroup name to match the other PCs. If you aren't connecting to the internet, run ipconfig to see if you are getting an IP address. If you are, then ping the router and the other machines. If you can do all that, then everything should work.

If it's not getting an IP, then either the NIC is no good, DHCP is not working or there is something wrong in the TCP/IP configuration.

Is the firewall enabled on your new XP machine? Do you have it set to obtain an IP through DHCP?
