Connecting to a preexisting WLAN

Trying to connect to an existing wireless LAN with a new computer. Win XP finds the WLAN but when I try to connect, it states that it is "automatic" instead of "connected." SO I am unable to get online with it. I am able to log onto my neighbors WLAN without a problem. I tried updating the firmware for the router (Linksys WRT54G)to no avail. Any thoughts/solutions?

Not sure what you are asking for...the router is a linksys wrt54g with no security turned on. Another notebook connects to the router with no problem. After some more thinking, I'm becoming convinced it may be a router issue.

actually, if anyone knows what "automatic" refers to, that would be especially helpful.

so both the working and nonworking pcs have the same wlan settings in the wlan properties?
Is the router providing dhcp? If so do you get a ip address? What ip address do you have on your wlan card if you do a ipconfig?
