Hi all,

I have two questions.

Firstly I have an NT server and a client machine win98se that work fine together when I connect them with a crossover cable.

When I put a hub in between them I cannot get them to talk to each other (and the win98 machine gets no further than the windows opening screen on boot up). When I connect the server to the hub the hub lights up green but when I connect the win98 machine no light up occurs. I've tried every combination of cross over and straight through leads between the machines and the hub but no luck.

Secondly I have a third machine that connects to the internet via cable and a lan card. This machine has a second lan card. Is it possible to use this second lan card to connect to the network through the hub and share the internet connection on all the machines? I'll need the answer to number 1 I think before I can address this point.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!!

Hi,

You need the straight cable (cat5 patch cable) if you want to use a hub, you definetly can't use a peer to peer cable with a hub.

I have had similar problems with networks. I would recommend checking your network cards to make sure their working (light on card) and also making sure your drivers are update. I know youve had these workingalready with the peer to peer setup but its worth checking beleive me.

If you want to share the internet connection of one machine you'll need ICS to be ticked in the internet options, connections menu. You also need the 'client' terminals to 'detect proxy settings'. Try the network wizard and restart. This should do it.

if hub make sure nic cards are not set to "auto" but 10mb half duplex. If this works you can try full duplex
