Connecting Site to Existing Network

Specs: Windows
I am in the process of setting up a site that will consist of three users. This site will have a cable connection behind some kind of small router (Linksys, Netgear, etc.). These users will need to use an application on their desktop that connects to a sql database at another location (corporate office). I am looking for some ideas of what would be the best and most secure way of accomplishing this.

Accessing a database across the internet is going to be slow.

The best way to do this is to have VPN devices at each location and create an encrypted VPN tunnel between. If both locations are on the same subnet you won't need a router between them.
