Connecting home desktop & laptop

Specs: Windows XP home, Intel 1.5GB
Hi. I hope someone will be able to help me. I'm asking this question for my Dad who has an ordinary pc running Windows XP. He uses it for mainly word processing, spreadsheet work, browsing and email. The PC is upstairs and he doesn't want to have to go up and downstairs all the time.

What he would like is a laptop downstairs with internet with which he can access the files on the PC.

Question: Can he get a laptop and a wireless router so both the PC and laptop have internet access and then access the PC files with Remote Desktop?

Please let me know if there is any other information you need.

Answer: Yes he can as long as the laptop has a wireless NIC.

Thank you Curt R. That's amazing. I'll make sure he gets a laptop with a wireless NIC. Would it matter if the laptop was Vista and the PC XP? And just to confirm they'll both be connected to the internet by the same wireless router.
