im trying to set up a network . ive bought a linksys wag300n router. i was having trouble getting my router to connect with my pc, ive now sorted that particular problem. but now i have another. ive gone through the setup wizard that came with the router, it went through some security settings and passwords, then it said it was saving my settings, a progress bar came up , but after after a couple of minutes, anerror message came up saying" unableconnection type. to detect an internet connection, please go to the advanced setting page and check . i know at some point i have to mess about with IP addresses and that kind of thing. should i have done already? or does that come later. if so, how do i go about it?

With most ISP's, if you don't specifically order, and pay for, a static IP account, you should get your IP information via their DHCP server. You should already know which you have (ie: static vs DHCP).
With your internet connection plugged into the WAN port of your router, and a PC or laptop plugged into a LAN port, open the router's management interface. Once open there should be a status screen for the WAN interface. If your account is DHCP, simply check there and confirm you have all necessary IP information (IP address, default gateway, subnet mask, DNS). If you do, check to see that your PC has correct IP information from the DHCP server within your router and try surfing. If you can connect, everything is fine.
If you have a static account with your ISP, they will have provided you with the necessary TCP/IP information to configure on your router. In the management interface, find the WAN configuration page and enter the info there and test.

"havent a clue how to do that"
Its in the router manualDoesn't sound like you have a internet connection. ISP stands for internet service provider. You pay someone money to hook up to wire that takes you to the internet. If you paid someone they usually give you a paper that has the wan settings. You then follow the manual to input those settings into the router.
Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

In this case I really do suggest contacting your ISP as they can guide you through the setup over the phone, it will be much easier for you to do this than trying to follow written guides in this forum besides your ISP will be able to check their logs and so forth to see errors and things we can't see.
