connected to internet no pages load

July 1, 2008 at 17:57:09
Specs: Win XP, P3

I got this computer from a school auction and when I first connected to Cable connection it said limited or no connectivity. So I manually changed the ip and it connected but web pages wont load. I noticed that in the status bar when the page tries to load it says detecting proxy settings. I thought maybe it wasn't trying to use the right connection. Any ideas?

What did you change the IP to and why? How do you know for sure you are connected? Do you get ping replies from a command prompt?

I changed the ip because it said invalid ip. It says its connected in network connections. When I look at the status it says it has sent bytes but not received. What should I ping?

Your Cable provider probably assigns the IP via DHCP. Change your IP configuration back to obtain the IP automatically (DHCP.) Then reboot the computer and run ipconfig again. Post back what it reads.

Are you positive that the network card works?

I had to actually register my MAC Address with my ISP Provider. That's the only way it would work.
