connect wireless printer, no router

Specs: Windows Vista
when i bought my computer i was told i could connect my hp pavilion desktop 'a6755y' to my hp printer 'c6380' since both have wireless capability... without a router. i've scoured the web and not found any step-by-step details for how a dummy like me can do this. i've tried creating an ad-hoc network but it says 'no signal' even though i've created a wep code and attached the antenna to the computer... and spent an hour with customer service being tossed back and forth between desktop and printer techs. most online posts seem concerned with computer-to-computer and network-to-internet. i want help on how to connect computer-to-printer without a router and no internet involved. help? thanks, Dad

This would be a simple ad-hoc wireless connection. I would suggest not using any encryption key until you know you have it working.
